Actress Cate Blanchett's made a stirring address to the Whitlam memorial service, saying: 'I was but three when he passed by, but I shall be grateful until the day I die'
She was an infant when he was in power, but Ms Blanchett today paid tribute to the Labor leader's contribution to race relations, women's rights and the arts, telling the packed crowd how she, and the country, had benefited from Whitlam's reforms
Ms Blanchett, a special guest speaker, said that despite being an infant when Whitlam became prime minister, she was struck by a 'great sorrow' over his death.
'I was but three when he passed by, but I shall be grateful until the day I die,' the Academy Award winner said, paying tribute to Whitlam's women's rights reforms, introduction of free healthcare and arts policies.
